Bangkok is chaos — gloriously so. Fourteen million people, 50 distinct neighborhoods, a skyline that shifts every year, and a street food scene that has no equal anywhere on earth. It's also a city that can be genuinely difficult to navigate if you don't know the systems locals use.

The good news: Bangkok is also one of the world's most app-friendly cities. Its transit, food, payments, and entertainment are all deeply digitized. Here's exactly which apps to have loaded before you arrive.

Getting Around Bangkok

Grab — Your Default Taxi

Forget metered taxis. While they're technically cheaper, the reality is that many Bangkok taxi drivers refuse to use the meter with tourists, negotiate inflated prices, or don't know the destination. Grab eliminates all of that: fixed price, GPS tracking, driver rating visible before you board.

Use GrabCar for air-conditioned rides, GrabBike for motorcycle taxis when you need to cut through traffic fast (and you will — Bangkok traffic is legendary). From Suvarnabhumi Airport, Grab is available in the designated ride-hailing zone on Level 1.

Bolt is a newer competitor with slightly lower prices in some areas — worth having both.

Google Maps with BTS/MRT Integration

Bangkok's mass transit system — the BTS Skytrain (elevated) and MRT subway — is clean, fast, and air-conditioned. Google Maps now shows accurate BTS/MRT routing, including connection points and journey times. The transit lines have expanded significantly in recent years, covering much of central Bangkok, Silom, Sukhumvit, and the airport rail link to Suvarnabhumi.

Pro tip: Save the BTS and MRT station names offline — pronouncing Thai station names to a driver is far harder than showing them on a map.

Bangkok MRT App (รถไฟฟ้า MRT)

The official MRT Blue Line and Purple Line app shows real-time train frequencies, fare calculations between stations, and system maps in English. Useful for planning day-trip routes across the city without using data.

ViaBus

Bangkok's bus network is vast, cheap (around 8–15 baht per ride), and air-conditioned on most routes. ViaBus shows real-time bus positions on a map — so you know if the 79 bus is 3 minutes away or 20. If you're staying longer than a few days, buses dramatically extend your mobility beyond the Skytrain corridors.

Food: Bangkok's Greatest Asset

Foodpanda

Bangkok has world-class food delivery infrastructure. Foodpanda covers virtually every neighborhood, with delivery times often under 30 minutes. The app works seamlessly with international cards, and the restaurant selection spans local Thai, Japanese, Korean, and international chains. Essential during monsoon season when stepping outside means getting drenched.

Wongnai

Wongnai is where Bangkok locals go to discover restaurants. It's Thailand's dominant food review platform — think of it as a Thai Yelp with better photos. While the interface is mostly Thai, the visual-first layout (photos, ratings, menu images) makes it navigable even without reading Thai. Use it to find the neighborhood spots that aren't on TripAdvisor.

LINE MAN

LINE MAN is the LINE-integrated food delivery service. It's particularly strong in areas where Foodpanda has thinner coverage, and delivery drivers can be messaged directly through LINE if there's an issue. Many local Thai restaurants list on LINE MAN but not Foodpanda.

Payments in Bangkok

Bangkok is increasingly cashless, but it operates on Thai payment rails rather than global ones.

PromptPay QR Codes

You'll see QR codes at almost every restaurant, market stall, and shop in Bangkok. These are PromptPay codes — Thailand's interbank instant transfer system. Most tourists can't access PromptPay directly, so the practical approach is: carry 1,000–2,000 baht cash for small vendors, and use your card or Grab Pay for larger purchases.

Wise Card

Every ATM in Bangkok charges a 200 baht (~$5.50) foreign transaction fee. Over a two-week trip with multiple withdrawals, this adds up fast. The Wise debit card bypasses most of these fees or significantly reduces them. Set it up at home before you fly.

Rabbit LINE Pay

Rabbit LINE Pay is a digital wallet integrated into the LINE app. Some tourists successfully link international Visa/Mastercard cards, enabling QR code payments at participating vendors. Not universal, but worth attempting — especially useful at 7-Eleven stores and Central malls.

Shopping & Markets

Klook

Bangkok's major attractions — the Grand Palace, Wat Pho, Muay Thai fights at Rajadamnern Stadium, dinner cruises on the Chao Phraya — can be booked in advance via Klook with skip-the-line access. During peak season (November–February), the Grand Palace complex can have 2+ hour queues. Klook tickets don't skip security, but they reduce the payment queue significantly.

Lazada / Shopee

If you're in Bangkok for more than a week, you'll discover that online shopping via Lazada or Shopee delivers to most hotels and serviced apartments within 24 hours. Useful for grabbing power adapters, toiletries, or gear you forgot to pack. Collection points are everywhere — 7-Eleven stores serve as Lazada pickup locations.
