The UAE runs on a specific tech ecosystem that differs from Europe and North America in a few important ways: some familiar apps are blocked, local alternatives dominate transport and payments, and government services have their own dedicated platforms.

The One Thing Most Travelers Don't Know

WhatsApp voice and video calls are officially blocked in the UAE. Text messages work fine, but audio and video calls over WhatsApp, FaceTime, Skype, and most VoIP apps do not function on UAE networks. The government-licensed alternatives are BOTIM and C'Me. Download one before you arrive — you'll need it to call home or take video meetings while you're there.

Transport

1. Careem

Careem is the UAE's dominant ride-hailing app and the one locals use daily. Owned by Uber but operating independently with its own driver network, it covers Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and beyond. Fares are metered and shown upfront. Payment works via card, cash, or Careem Credits.

Why it beats taxis: No haggling, no "I don't know that area," no cash required. Pickup in central Dubai typically takes 3–5 minutes.

2. Uber

Uber also operates in the UAE and shares some of the Careem driver pool. Having both apps installed means you can compare surge pricing in real time. In Abu Dhabi, Uber sometimes has better coverage than Careem in outer districts.

3. RTA Dubai

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) app is your gateway to Dubai's excellent public transit system: metro, bus, tram, and water bus (abra). You can top up your Nol card (Dubai's transit card) from the app, plan journeys, check schedules, and buy tickets without queuing at machines.

The Dubai Metro is fast, clean, air-conditioned, and covers most major tourist and business destinations. A single journey from the airport to central Dubai costs just a few dirhams — far cheaper than any taxi for that route.

4. Darb (Abu Dhabi DOT)

If you're visiting Abu Dhabi, Darb is the equivalent public transport app for the emirate. It covers buses, ferries, and route planning across Abu Dhabi city and to nearby attractions like Yas Island and Saadiyat.

5. BOTIM

BOTIM is one of two UAE-licensed VoIP apps that actually work on UAE carrier networks. It supports voice calls, video calls, and messaging — and unlike WhatsApp calls, it functions reliably. Monthly plans start at AED 25 for unlimited calls (international included). Download it before travel and get a subscription active.

For business travelers: Many UAE professionals use BOTIM alongside WhatsApp text. Don't assume a UAE contact will answer a WhatsApp call — they may not be able to.

Payments & Finance

6. Wise (or Your International Bank App)

The UAE dirham (AED) is pegged to the USD at AED 3.67. ATMs are plentiful and most accept foreign cards, but Wise gives you near-real-exchange-rate conversions with lower fees. Use it to hold AED or pay from a multi-currency account without forex markup.

Cash vs. card: Dubai is extremely card-friendly — even street food vendors and market stalls often accept cards. That said, carry AED 100–200 in cash for occasional small purchases and tips.

10. Noon (NoonFood)
