EU EES Is Here: Apps You Need for Traveling to Europe in 2026

As of April 10, 2026, Europe has changed how non-EU travelers enter the Schengen Area. The EU Entry/Exit System (EES) is now fully operational — replacing the old passport stamp system with digital biometric registration at every border crossing. If you're traveling to France, Italy, Spain, Germany, or any of the 27 Schengen countries, this affects you directly.

What Is the EU EES?

The Entry/Exit System is a digital border management tool that records the entry and exit of non-EU/EEA nationals at all external Schengen borders. Instead of a passport stamp, border officers (or automated kiosks) scan your fingerprints and take a facial image. The system automatically tracks how long you've been in the Schengen Area against the 90/180-day rule.

Who does EES affect?

• Citizens of countries that do NOT need a visa to enter Schengen (e.g., Americans, Canadians, Australians, British citizens post-Brexit, and many others)
• Citizens of countries that DO need a visa are already tracked in the Visa Information System

Who is exempt?

• EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens
• Holders of Schengen long-stay visas or residence permits

What to Expect at the Border

First-time registration (at the border): If you haven't pre-registered via the Travel to Europe app, border officers will register you on arrival. Expect this to add 10–30 minutes to your border crossing time, especially in the first months of EES rollout. Early morning and late-night flights may have shorter queues.

Automated kiosks: Many major airports are installing self-service EES kiosks where you scan your own documents and biometrics. These are faster than the officer-attended lanes for pre-registered travelers.

90/180-day tracking: EES automates the calculation of your allowed Schengen days. The old method of counting passport stamps is gone — the system knows exactly when you entered and exited.
