We built WhatAppDoINeed because that hour is avoidable. Every time.

What WhatAppDoINeed Does

WhatAppDoINeed is a free, curated directory of essential travel apps — organized by country. For every destination we cover, we answer the one question every traveler should ask before booking their flight:

What apps do I actually need here?

Each country page breaks down the essentials by category:

• Transportation — the ride-hailing apps that work, the transit apps locals actually use, the navigation tools that handle local roads and rail
• Payments & Finance — QR platforms, digital wallets, currency exchange, and which foreign cards work (and where they don't)
• Communication — messaging apps your hosts use, translation tools that handle local scripts
• Food & Delivery — restaurant booking, delivery apps, the local Yelp equivalent
• Connectivity — eSIM recommendations, VPN guidance for restricted-access countries
• Travel & Tourism — sightseeing apps, official tourism tools, local event platforms

We don't list every app in the App Store. We list the apps that matter — the ones you'll wish you had when you don't.

Why We Built This

Travel app information is scattered: Reddit threads from 2019, blogs optimizing for affiliate clicks, tourism boards that haven't been updated since the pandemic. The honest answer to "what apps do I need in Vietnam?" shouldn't take three hours and six browser tabs.

We wanted one place. Country-specific. Regularly updated. Organized not by app category, but by the actual problems you face when you land somewhere new.

We launched with 112 countries across every major travel region:

A Few Examples Worth Knowing

Japan is one of the most app-dependent destinations in the world. IC card apps (Suica, ICOCA) work as transit cards and contactless payment nationwide. Google Maps handles train routing poorly — Hyperdia does it better. Our Japan page covers the full picture.

China requires more advance prep than almost anywhere. Google, WhatsApp, and Instagram are blocked. WeChat and Alipay are essential — and both need to be set up before you enter. VPN access requires planning before you board. Our China page walks through it.

Brazil surprises travelers with Pix — the national instant payment system that Brazilians use everywhere, from restaurants to street stalls. Link your card before you arrive. Our Brazil page covers Pix alongside Uber, 99, and iFood.

How We Stay Current

Apps launch, get acquired, go offline, or get banned in specific countries. We're building an ongoing audit system to track app availability, flag regional removals, and push updates when the ground truth changes.

If you spot an outdated recommendation or a gap in a country's list, the feedback button on every page goes straight to our review queue.
