Thailand's islands are the reason millions of people book flights every year. Turquoise water, limestone cliffs, world-class diving, and beach bars that go until sunrise. But getting between the islands — and navigating them once you arrive — is a different challenge than navigating Bangkok.

There's no single transit network. Ferries run on seasonal schedules. Some islands have no ATMs. Others have excellent 4G coverage; a few barely have reliable power. The right apps make the difference between smooth island-hopping and a day spent stranded at a pier.

Booking Your Island Transport

12Go is indispensable for Thai island travel. It aggregates ferry routes, bus transfers, and combination tickets across the entire country. Lomprayah is the premium high-speed catamaran operator connecting the Gulf Islands (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao). Their app shows real-time schedules, allows booking, and stores your e-ticket. On rough-sea days, you'll want to check for cancellations directly in the app before heading to the pier.

FlightRadar24 / AirAsia App

For the Andaman islands (Phuket, Krabi, Koh Lanta, Koh Phi Phi), flying is often faster and comparable in price to the long bus-ferry route. AirAsia operates Bangkok-Phuket and Bangkok-Krabi routes frequently, sometimes for under 1,000 baht ($28) when booked in advance. Check AirAsia or Nok Air apps for deals.

Navigation on the Islands

Google Maps Offline

This is critical: download offline maps for every island before you leave the mainland. Google Maps covers Thai islands well, including beach roads, dive shops, restaurants, and accommodation, but cellular signal on the water or in jungle areas can be weak or absent. Having an offline map means you're never truly lost.

Maps.me

Maps.me uses OpenStreetMap data and works fully offline. On smaller islands like Koh Lipe, Koh Chang, or Koh Mak where Google Maps coverage thins out, Maps.me often has better detail for beach paths, jungle trails, and local shops. Free to download and completely offline-capable.

Grab (Phuket & Koh Samui)

Grab operates on Phuket and Koh Samui, though coverage is spottier than Bangkok. On Phuket in particular, local songthaew (shared red trucks) can be a cheaper option, but Grab provides the same reliability guarantee for solo travel or late-night rides. On smaller islands, motorbike rentals replace taxis entirely.

Money on the Islands

Wise Card

ATM availability varies dramatically by island. Koh Samui has ATMs everywhere; Koh Lipe has a handful of machines that regularly run out of cash during peak season. Wherever you are, every Thai ATM charges 200–220 baht per foreign withdrawal. The Wise card minimizes this through fee waivers (up to a monthly limit).

Practical rule: Withdraw enough cash on the mainland or at the airport before reaching smaller islands. Don't rely on finding a working ATM on a tiny island on a Friday night.

XE Currency

Island prices fluctuate, and knowing the baht exchange rate helps you gauge whether a snorkeling tour price is fair or whether you're being offered the tourist rate. XE Currency works offline once cached.

Staying Connected

TrueMove H / AIS eSIM

Coverage on major islands (Phuket, Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao) is generally solid 4G from both TrueMove H and AIS. Remote islands or the areas between islands have obvious gaps. The key: both carriers include roaming on their tourist SIM packages, so you're covered everywhere they have signal.
