Golden Week — April 29 to May 5 — is Japan's most intense domestic travel period. Golden Week is a cluster of four national holidays:

May 3 — Constitution Day (憲法記念日)

Most Japanese companies and schools close for the entire period. Domestic tourism peaks. Hotel prices double (or triple). Shinkansen reservations sell out weeks in advance. Popular attractions like Nikko, Kyoto's Arashiyama, and Mount Fuji's Yoshida Trail become genuinely overcrowded.

For tourists, Golden Week means vibrant street festivals, special seasonal food, and a rare window into how Japan celebrates — but it requires more preparation than a typical trip.

Before You Land: Book These Now

If you haven't done these things yet, do them before reading further:

Shinkansen reserved seats — use the JR booking app or seat reservation via SmartEX (see below). Unreserved cars on the Tokaido Shinkansen during Golden Week involve standing for the entire 2.5-hour Tokyo–Osaka journey.
Accommodation — Booking.com, Hotels.com, and Japanese OTAs like Jalan and Rakuten Travel are all running low on central Tokyo and Kyoto inventory. If you find nothing, consider basing yourself in Osaka for Kyoto day trips.

Suica (or PASMO) Japan's IC transit card works on almost every train, bus, and ferry in the country — plus konbini, vending machines, and an increasing number of restaurants. Add it to your Apple Wallet or Google Pay before you arrive. Top up at any station or via the app. This eliminates ticket-machine queues entirely.

Japan Official Travel App The Japan Tourism Agency's app includes offline-capable maps, disaster alert notifications in English, and emergency contacts. Download before you land — it works without data in offline mode for maps.

🗺️ Navigation & Crowds

Google Maps (with Busyness view) Enable the "Popular times" layer in Google Maps to see real-time crowd density at attractions. During Golden Week, use this before heading anywhere — the Fushimi Inari torii gates in Kyoto, for example, can be near-empty at 6 AM and packed solid by 10 AM.

Yahoo! Japan Map (ヤフーカーナビ) If you're renting a car (useful for reaching rural areas during Golden Week), Yahoo's navigation app is what Japanese drivers use. PayPay Japan's dominant QR payment app. Works at millions of shops, restaurants, and markets — including many small cash-only-looking establishments that adopted QR payments during COVID. Download and link a credit card. Foreigners with non-Japanese phone numbers can register using the international phone option.

Revolut / Wise For withdrawing yen from 7-Bank or Japan Post ATMs (both accept international cards). Keep both apps on your phone — Revolut for low-fee card spending everywhere, and yen cash for older restaurants, shrines, and rural areas that remain cash-only.

🍜 Food & Restaurants

Tabelog Japan's leading restaurant review platform — more granular and accurate than Google Maps for Tokyo and Kyoto dining. The English interface is usable. Filter by cuisine, area, price, and reservation availability. During Golden Week, sort by "accepts reservations today" to find last-minute openings.

Uber Eats / Wolt Both operate in major Japanese cities. Useful for Golden Week evenings when street crowds are overwhelming — order to your hotel instead of fighting for restaurant seats.

Google Translate (Camera mode) Point your camera at any menu and translate in real time. Works offline if you download the Japanese language pack in advance. Essential for Golden Week when menus at smaller local restaurants won't have English.

Kyoto — The hardest destination during Golden Week. Fushimi Inari, Arashiyama, and Gion are genuinely uncomfortable mid-morning to mid-afternoon. Strategy: go to major sites before 8 AM or after 5 PM, and fill the middle of the day with less-touristed shrines, covered shopping arcades (Nishiki Market, Teramachi), or day trips to Nara.

Osaka — Slightly less pressured than Kyoto. Dotonbori and Shinsaibashi are busy but manageable. Good base for day-tripping to Kyoto or Hiroshima by Shinkansen.

Rural Japan — Golden Week is the best time to see rural Japan at its most alive. Festivals, rice-planting ceremonies, and spring markets happen in small towns that are otherwise quiet. Use Navitime or Google Maps to find local transit from major Shinkansen stops.

What Closes During Golden Week

Government offices, post offices, city halls — fully closed
Some banks and financial services — limited hours
Many small family-run restaurants and shops — closed for the week (a holiday for them too)
Doctor's offices and clinics — emergency rooms remain open; routine appointments unavailable

Konbini (convenience stores) stay open 24/7. 7-Eleven, FamilyMart, and Lawson become your most reliable option for food, cash (7-Bank ATMs), printing, and basic supplies.
