Japan is a tech-forward country with an app for everything — but many of the best ones are Japan-specific and require setup before arrival. Here's your complete download list.

Getting Around

1. Suica / PASMO (Apple Wallet)

Japan's IC transit cards work on virtually every train, bus, and convenience store. Add a Suica or PASMO to Apple Wallet before you land — no physical card needed.

• Works on JR trains, metros, buses, and monorails
• Tap to pay at convenience stores, vending machines, and many restaurants
• Top up directly from your international credit card

Important: This only works on iPhone 8+ or Apple Watch Series 3+. Android users need a physical card from the airport.

2. Google Maps

Google Maps is exceptional in Japan. It knows every train schedule, transfer, platform number, and walking route. Download Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto offline maps.

3. Japan Transit (Navitime)

For complex multi-transfer routes, Navitime shows options Google Maps might miss — including the cheapest route (important when not using a rail pass).

4. Shinkansen Smartex

Book and ride bullet trains with just your phone. No paper tickets, no queuing at ticket machines. Link your credit card, reserve a seat, and tap through the gate.

5. Tabelog

Japan's #1 restaurant discovery app — think Yelp but actually trusted by locals. Ratings above 3.5 are considered excellent (the scale is harsh). Use the built-in translation or screenshot and translate.

6. Uber Eats Japan

The dominant food delivery app in major cities. Great for late-night ramen delivery to your hotel when you're too exhausted to go out.

7. Gurunavi

Best for finding restaurants with English menus. Filter by cuisine, area, and budget. Essential for navigating the overwhelming food scene in Tokyo.

Communication

8. LINE

LINE is Japan's WhatsApp. Everyone uses it — friends, businesses, hotels, even government services. Set it up before arrival. Many restaurants take reservations via LINE.

9. Google Translate

The camera translation feature is critical for:

• Restaurant menus (especially small local places)
• Train station signs in rural areas
• Vending machines with only Japanese labels

10. Wise
